Way of the Power…

chapter 1

(Author notes: I want to create a story that could move people hearts. I hope this chapter can do it.)

A young boy, around eight years old is crouching on the ground. Several boys is kicking him but he didn’t retaliate. The boy seemed to be protecting something with his body. It was precious enough until he decided to throw his body for it.

“Trash, why don’t you die.”
“How can a trash like him exist?”
“A 「Powerless」human, how can it is possible?”
“Even 『Mythical beast』has 【Power】.”
“This boy is lower than 『Mythical beast』.”
“That’s true. Hahaha.”

The group surrounding him didn’t stopped with harassing his body but they also leave a wound on his heart. However no matter how hard he was beaten, the little boy always preserved.

After the other boys get tired punching and kicking him, they finally leave him alone.

The boy however didn’t cared about the wound on his body. He looked down at his stomach and he sighed in relief.
“Thanks God it wasn’t crushed.”

mustering up his strength, the boy stands up and walked wearily towards his home.

“Mom, I’m back.”

before entering the house, the boy expression changed. He patted on his ragged clothes to clean the dirt on his body. He wash his face using water from the small puddle on the ground. It was muddy but it is able to wash the dirt and some blood on his face. It revealed his childish face but he didn’t show his run down, gloomy and tired expression anymore. He showed a bright smile like the sun as he enter.

“Ryu, you’re back. Welcome home.”

the boy mother greets him from her bed. The house is small enough that the bed, small dining table and other shabby furniture is placed in one room. In fact, it only has one room. The boy immediately come to where his mother is rested.

“Mom, look at what I brought home.”

from behind his clothes, the boy takes out two dumplings. It is the thing that he protected with all his might before. His mother is surprised seeing that. In reality, she know how hard it is for Ryu to get it. His mother can only look at the dumplings with watery eyes.

Eight years ago, their life was completely different. Ryu father is a 『Beast Hunter』. He has reached the first level of 「Master」rank at the age of twenty two. Indeed, his future is bright. He wasn’t a genius however he was better than most of people. At that time, he was leading a party and going on a mission to hunt 『Mythical beast』. However in that mission, he lost his life leaving the pregnant wife alone. He has some money but his former party member asked for compensation from his wife which leads to the current condition.

Ryu’s mother has a weak body since birth. Her 【Power】is only at the second level of 「Normal」rank which isn’t really showing development since it was first manifested. When she was giving birth to Ryu, her weak constitution got worsen. When Ryu was born and her husband passed away, she is forced to do hard labor for living which is a torture for her body and it finally takes it tolls. Three years ago, when Ryu is five years old finally her legs give up on her. Her current condition isn’t improving either and her internal organs is in more worst state. They barely have enough food for the day, how could they got money to treat her condition. Even the dumpling in front of her right now is already a luxury.

“Mother, please eat this quickly.”

with bright and innocent eyes, Ryu passed the dumplings at his mother. Her mother looked at the food and pushed it back at him.

“Ryu, you should be the one who eats it.”

however, Ryu shook his head and said: “Mother, I already eat a lot of dumpling today. The old man at the shop is really generous. This is your share.”

when Ryu’s mother couldn’t work anymore because of her leg, Ryu has been trying hard to find food. But, what can a child like him do? He is forced to help at various place and be paid meaninglessly. Even this dumpling was given because the man at the shop feel sorry for him. To tell the truth, Ryu usually only eat once a day. The food itself was a gruel of grass that he picked on the roadside. All the money he earn and food given to him, was all given to his mother. That is why, Ryu looked skinny and unhealthy more than his mother.

His mother actually know of this however she couldn’t do anything. When Ryu bought food home for the first time, she refused to eat it and Ryu coldly said: “If you don’t want to eat it then I will throw it away.”

That is why, she accepted the food that Ryu gives to her. Deep in her heart, she feel really grateful for her son. That is why, she can only smile and give him her love.

“Alright then, I’ll eat it.”

Ryu’s mother eat the food silently with tears in her eyes.

“Ryu, I’m sorry.”

even when she said that, Ryu only looked at her with a smile.
“Mom, what are you saying? You never did anything wrong to me. Now, don’t cry, it will be hard for you to eat if you cry.”

she is feeling sorry because as his mother, she couldn’t do anything. She also feel sorry that it was probably because of her that Ryu is a 「Powerless」one. His father is such an outstanding man so the fault must lies on her. If only Ryu has 【Power】, he could enter the schools and changed his fate. His food and living expenses will be covered by the schools since most of it are boarding school. She really wished that could happen so Ryu shouldn’t worry about taking care of her anymore. However even if he really have 【Power】, Ryu would never abandoned his mother for his own sake.

After she finished the two dumplings, Ryu takes out a bowl and gathered water from the river two kilometer away. He used the water to wipe his mother body and afterwards sit beside her bed. After seeing that his mother is already asleep, he cleaned the house and do the laundry at the river again.

Their house is located at the city outskirts and the river is already way out of the town area. So he didn’t dare to stay there for long. After all even if the area around the city is cleared from 『Mythical beast』, and 『Beast Hunter』patrolling regularly, there are no guarantee that they won’t be attacked. The reason they lived in such a place is because they don’t have any money to afford a better living condition and their luck is good that they never encountered any 『Mythical beast』all this time.
