Chapter 2

The city where Ryu and his mother lived is called Blue River city. The name comes from the pure blue river that flowed near the city outskirts. Since the 『Mythical beast』come to power, every city erected a wall to fend off 『Mythical beast』and 『Beast Hunter』patrolling regularly. The requirements to be in the patrol guard is the person should be in third level 「Expert」rank 【Power】. This job is also safer than becoming a full fledged 『Beast Hunter』so the city never run out of guards.

As usual, two guards are patrolling at the city outskirts.

“Senior, why we never patrol the area ahead of us?”

“Ah, are you new? Since last year, not a single 『Mythical beast』have been sighted approaching that area so we usually skip the patrol.”

“Eh, that’s weird but should we really skip the patrol?”

“That’s fine, trust me. Nothing bad will ever happened. After all there’s only a single poor family living there.”

After that, the two guards returned to their post skipped the area ahead of them.

The poor family mentioned by the guards are Ryu and his mother. Of course they didn’t know that the guards slacking off from guarding their area.

On another part of the town, Ryu is happily washing dishes in a restaurant. The owner come and smiled at him.

“Ryu, I think that’s enough for today. You can go home and take these steamed bun.”

“Thank you uncle.”

With a big smile, Ryu finished the dishes and happily run with steamed bun in his arm.
Actually, today is his mother birthday. He worked hard to buy a cake or presents but he still far off from gathering the money. That is why this steamed bun can be his treat for his mother birthday.

In this era, 【Power】means everything. Becoming a 『Beast Hunter』, killing 『Mythical beast』, has been everyone dreams. However everyone have an obstacle that they have to face. Those who failed in becoming famous 『Beast Hunter』soon met their limit. Rather than risking their live facing 『Mythical beast』, they know that taking advantage of others weaker than them is a more profitable way of living.

Some called them bandits, thieves, but there is nothing wrong with their way of living since 【Power】means everything. Taking something from someone weaker than them is allowed since to fight back, they need to be stronger or pay for someone to do it. It was better to just let it go.

There is a duo well known for their mischievous deeds known as the ‘Blue River Duo’. They are free to do what they want since their power is at first level of「Master」 rank and no guards are able to stop them.

“Brother Hiro, it’s that trash again.”

“Shima, quick, take that boy here.”

Ryu, without 【Power】are often being bullied by others. The other boys is stronger than him because they have their 【Power】 manifested. There is no way for him to fight back so he quietly accepted the humiliation and unjust treatment.

“Brother Hiro, brother Shima, please let me off for today. Today is my mother birthday.”
at this point, Ryu has known their names. They never introduce themselves but Ryu learned their name when they are talking at each other while punching and kicking him.

“Oh, you dare to ask something from us?”
“yeah, even if today is your mother birthday, why should we care?”
“brother Hiro, look he has something in his arm.”
“trash, give me that.”

seeing that his birthday presents are going to be taken, Ryu used his body to protect it and curled up on the ground.

“No, don’t take this. You may hit me again but please don’t take this.”

with an evil smirk, Hiro and Shima looked at each other eyes.

“The more you ask me not to take it, the more I want to take it.”
“Yes brother, let give this trash a lesson and take that thing.”

with that determination, Ryu withstand their attack but it only agitates them more. Today, they bullied him for more than an hour while usually it only ends in minutes. It was because Ryu protected the steamed buns harder than ever.

The ‘Blue River Duo’ is consist of two 「Master」 rank people. Although their power level is still at the first level but they are still a 「Master」 rank . In Blue River City where the guard captain is only at the fifth level of 「Expert」rank, there is no one that could stop them.

“Ichi, don’t you feel bored lately.”

“Brother San, how can that be? Look here, we’re able to eat without paying, drink and sleep with girls without restraints. How can this be boring?”

“Idiots. The woman in this city are ugly. How can you keep sleeping with them every night?”

“Ah, if that’s what you mean, I heard that there is a beauty living in the city outskirts. Her beauty even surpassed the ‘dragon’s den’ number one Sakura.”

“Is that true?”

“How can I lied to you. She is a wife of a former 『Beast Hunter』but her husband died when hunting 『Mythical beast』.”

“Then why did you tell me now?”

“I guess, it wasn’t the right time yet.”

“Alright, then let’s go there now.”

The sun is already set and they sky has grown dark. Ryu is walking wobbly towards his house. His condition is worst than yesterday. There is a faint blood stain on the corner of his lips and under his right eye, his cheek is swollen. However he still smiled while looking at the bag in his hand.

“Hehe, at least the steamed bun is safe.”

looking at his house that is not far away, Ryu noticed something is wrong. The door to his house is wide open. His mother couldn’t move from the bed so someone must have come. With a panicked expression, Ryu run towards his house.

“Mother!”

as fast as he can, he forgot all the pain on his body. The room was dark and he can only roughly see. He remember where all the furniture is placed but now it’s already in a mess.

“Mom!”

he immediately searched for his mother.

Ryu’s mother is laying down on the bed weakly. She looked outside at the sky and knows it was the time for Ryu to come home. So she tried her best to sit on the bed and waited for him. Although Ryu always feed her the best food he could get but it still isn’t enough. She knows well that her time is nearing so she has survived all this time only because of her will power.

She don’t want to leave her son alone in this world. That is her last life line.

That day however Ryu hasn’t come back. Since it was her birthday he must be preparing something for her.

The door of the house is opened but it wasn’t Ryu. Two unknown men entered the house.

“What are you doing here? Go away!”

looking at their face expression, Ryu’s mother know that they have bad intentions.

“I have no money. Please, you come to the wrong house.”

hearing that, the two men showed a delighted expression.

“Ichi, this woman is splendid.”

“Of course, I didn’t dare to tell you a lie brother San.”

Even though Ryu’s mother is weak and her face is pale but when she is still young, she is one of the most beautiful girl in town. Although she is now sick, it only reduce her beauty slightly.

“Don’t worry madam, we’re not here for your money.”

Hearing that, Ryu’s mother realized what is going to come.

“Brother San, it seemed that she couldn’t move.”

“Don’t worry, I have plenty of technique and it’s good for us that she couldn’t ran away.”

“Then, I’ll wait outside brother San.”

“Of course, you’ll get your turn after I finished.”

Ryu didn’t know what happened here. The room is wrecked, as if a whirlwind happened inside. His mother is lying down on the ground. Her body isn’t covered by a single string and there are trace of blood on her nether area. Bruises can be seen on her skin and all over her body.

“Mom! Wake up.”

he approached her and wanted to put her back on top of the bed. But once he hugged her, he realized that she no longer breathe. Her body warmth is still lingering, indicating that she breathe out her last breath just a moment ago.

“Mom! Mom! Please wake up!”

What ever he said to her, she wouldn’t open her eyes.

“Mom, look I have steamed bun for your birthday. Mom, please open your eyes.”

“I know today I’m a little bit late. But please, don’t be angry at me.”

“I’m sorry… I promise I will buy you a cake but please, don’t leave me alone.”

“I’m sorry if I am such a useless child but Mom, don’t do this to me.”

“Mother…”

His shout gradually got softer since his own condition isn’t better than her. Ryu can only hugged her while crying. He didn’t make any sound only stream of tears run down on his face while he embraced her body tightly.
