Mai can use it without accessories? Doesn’t this mean magic can be obtained without those enshrined stones?

Also Mai has fighting power on a point where she should be using physical reinforcement on an unconscious level, so she already has some mana control. Add this to repeating the magical girl movement endlessly in front of the TV, having the image and knowledge on fire this makes for the base requirements. So the instant she gets a high power accessory that helps in the last step she will end up learning it.

After getting a taste/feel of the energies that first time, since Mai looks like a smart girl, she would likely have tried to reproduce that feeling herself, until she could do it without the accessory.

She could feel Aya invoking magic in their first meeting, it probably feels like chi to her, as a martial artist.

Since magic in the other world can be invoked through force of will, this is a likely result.

If we’re following the template, the outcome of the fight would not matter, once Mai gets a taste of Seiji’s true abilities, she will eventually find out about the other world traveling and Seiji will likely bring her along for the ride 🙂
