Meh, as a gag isn’t it fine? He’s already promised to marry Elena when she comes of age, so it’s not like there isn’t any developments on the romantic front. Rather than the MC being universally dense like other protagonists, he’s specifically resistant to Lela’s hints, making her the one unfortunate woman. Given her past actions, you could say she deserves a bit of suffering as atonement.
