Polymath Redux – Chapter 10

Polymath Redux – Welcome to the Adventurer’s Guild!
Chapter X

There were four golden rules given to Irina by her master for her to follow after she had joined to become an adventurer. Those four rules were as follows:

1. Never kill humans, unless the context had called for it to be necessary.

The rule was especially important for Irina who’s internal settings were that she hated humans. In this human city, killing humans would counterproductive and would only contribute to a negative reputation, that is of course unless the context had made it necessary for her to do so.

2. Always keep a pleasant attitude but speak little, unless she was being harassed.

Though it may sound a little odd for it to be a rule, Irina’s biggest problem was her attitude towards beings other than her master. Due to Irina’s natural physique and presence she was a fairly charismatic individual when seen from afar, but that illusion quickly shatters when they interact with her up close. However just a small change in her personality; if she was more pleasant to be around then her natural charisma would only jump up.

Though for Irina this rule was harder to follow than the first, but she decided to try her best for the sake of her master. Also, though unlikely, were she ever to be harassed she had gotten permission from her master to ‘fight back’ a little.

3. Never join another party and always operate solo.

This rule existed more for others than it did for Irina herself. Since she was capable, Mordred didn’t really worry about what would happen if she was caught up in a dangerous situation. The reason this rule existed was for keeping up appearances of a ‘lone, mysterious adventurer’ and for allowing Irina to move however she wanted during jobs and missions.

The other reason was that it was easier for her to gain reputation as a strong solo adventurer.

4. Never transform into your true form.

For obvious reasons.

With those four golden rules engraved into her very soul Irina had entered Adventurer Guild’s Administrative building. The interior was much bigger and more brilliantly adorned than what Irina had originally anticipated, the place was brimming with shiny decorations, of which the most eye catching were the crystalline chandeliers.

The floor covered by a deep red colored carpet, and although Irina had thought that at least the air inside would be filled with sweaty adventurers that was not the case. The air arguably smelt better and more refreshing than the outside. Apparently there were things called ‘mana stones’ that many people had used for daily things, with the most popular use being as candles or a light source, then followed by being used as air fresheners.

Perhaps it was because she had arrived just as soon as dinner had ended but there were a lot more adventurers than what she had anticipated. By a glance she could tell that most of these people were here to turn in their day’s quests and receive their payment and rewards.

Following her master’s instructions she tried to maintain a hearty and pleasant atmosphere whilst also gauging the strength of the other adventurers. From her point of view most of these people were weak, there were a few exceptions but even then she was confident she could beat them without much problem.

Many people stared at her with a mixture of envy and awe at her lavishing armor and crimson great sword. Compared to her’s most of their armors were standard issue plate armor or leather armor, depending on their occupation. Irina eventually got up to the counter and even the lady at the front desk stared at her for a solid few seconds before snapping back into reality and addressing her.

“Ah, good evening, are you here to turn in your quest?”

Even though Irina had never set foot into this building before, the receptionist lady had assumed she was an experienced adventurer, how could she not after seeing such pristine and well made equipment?

“No, I’m here to become an adventurer.”

“Eh…? Oh! Oh, sorry I thought you were already an adventurer. Then please wait a moment, I’ll bring you a form to fill.”

Irina nodded. Though on the outside nothing seemed to be wrong, but on the inside a terrifying battle was raging on trying to suppress her draconian instincts to go on a rampage. She was able to bear walking in this human infested city merely because she was with her master but now things were different, she was to interact with these cretins on a daily basis without being able to see her beloved master.

The only saving grace of this was that she was allowed to contact her master whenever she wanted to and that she was working solo, thus reducing the time she had to interact with the humans.

“Sorry for keeping you waiting, please fill out this form and drop a blot of blood into this small area.”

After filling out the forms she lightly pierced her thumb and made a thumb print on the small indicated area. With the assistance of magic her paper form magically turned into a metallic card, it was a blank pale silver color with her name written on the top.

Beneath it was her Adventurer Level, with her current level being E5. The leveling system used by the Adventurer guild was a simple alpha-numeric value system, starting at the lowest rank of E5 then moving onto E4, E3, E2, E1, then D5.

The ranks starting from E then D, C, B, A, S, SS, SSS, OMEGA. So in total, Irina had to rank up 45 times to reach the absolute pinnacle which was an OMEGA-1 rank adventurer. There was also the option to form an ‘adventurer party’ but she opted out of that one, this option followed much the same order of progression as a solo adventurer.

If multiple adventurers of different rankings got together to form a party, an average would be measured and that would be the ranking of the newly formed party. Just thinking about all of this was giving Irina a headache, all she wanted to do right now was go back to her master’s side for the night.

While the Adventurer’s guild was open 24/7 there was no real need for Irina to start her adventuring just yet. After receiving her adventurer card she was set to go but was interrupted by curious bystanders who got a little close.

“Umm… excuse me?”

It was a younger girl, perhaps around the age of 15, she wasn’t alone there were two other boys slightly older than her standing behind her. They all had an anxious face as they approached such a beauty like herself.

“Yes?”

Remembering her master’s orders she gave out a pleasant response.

“We couldn’t help but notice that you had just signed up to become an adventurer. Actually we’re complete newbies ourselves since we’re only rank E4, so we were wondering if you would like to join our party?”

One of the boys asked with an anticipated expression.

“Sorry, I don’t plan on joining any parties and wish to operate solo. If that is all, then.”

Giving a small bow of apologies she brushed them off and started heading towards the exit. She couldn’t tolerate staying in this place filled with humans any longer. However just as she was about to leave there was some back chatter about her from the more ‘experienced’ adventurers.

[Did she really just say that?]
[Such an arrogant woman, just because her gear looks expensive.]
[Lol, how many men do you think she’s slept with the get that?]
[This is the problem with newbs these days!]

With her acute sense of hearing due to being a dragon she could hear them all, though she didn’t particularly care… no actually she did care, immensely. This body that she had received from her master, for them to be insinuating vulgar theories. She wanted nothing more than to recover her tarnished honor by decapitating all of them, however she was forbidden to so by the first rule.

Soon there was a bit of a stir amongst the adventurers and they were all taking pot shots at her. The sounds of laughter and cheering could be heard but they were simply just insults being hurled around at her.

“What’s with all of the ruckus?”

Suddenly descending from downstairs was a 5 man group of veteran looking adventurers. One of them had asked what the ruckus was about but everyone in the room had shut up upon their entry.

The most eye-catching individual was a large man wearing a sturdy looking wolf pelt robe. He had large bulging muscles and looked like he could crush this entire building in mere seconds. Clear signs of a long history of battle were etched across the large man’s skin in the form of various scars. Strapped behind his back were two large shields, one black and one white.

To that large man’s side was a young elf maiden, she was rather on the short side with fluffy pink hair. Strapped to her back was a long navy colored staff, and from her attire she was some sort of magic user, perhaps a [magician] or [cleric].

To her front was another woman that looked like a magician type, only this time she was a human with bright orange hair. She wore rather revealing clothes for a magician, a tank top that accentuated her breasts and cleavage with long dark colored trousers that outlined her long and slender legs. In fact Irina was only able to tell that she was a magician type simply because of a small black book strapped to her long trousers, most likely some sort of ‘grimoire’.

Next was a rather haughty man, in fact if Irina didn’t know any better he was a beast man, a Therianthrope. Most likely that kind of being would fall under the ‘demon’ category so she was rather surprised to see one working as an adventurer in a predominantly human city. He had sharp spiky grey hair and sharp red eyes, strapped to the sides of his hips were knucklers with sharp edges in front. From the looks of it he was a [brawler] also a ‘werewolf’?

Finally the one that looked like the leader of the bunch was a slender woman with bright white hair. Rather than a fighter she looked more like the daughter of a noble, but Irina was able to tell she was the leader merely by the presence she exerted on her surroundings. She wore easily maneuverable, hybrid plate metal/leather armor just like Irina and strapped to her side was a thin rapier.

All five adventurers had only caught Irina’s attention simply because she was told to take note of eye catching adventurers by her master. If they had met under different circumstances she would not have even batted them an eye.

The voice of the adventurers around them had grown restless once more.

[Oi, isn’t that ‘Hywel Knights’?]
[What, you mean the OMEGA rank party? The one that was recognized by the Dragon King?!]
[They certainly look pretty tough.]
[What were they doing upstairs? Some sort of board meeting with the adventurer guild?]

‘Hywel Knights’, ‘Dragon King’ and ‘OMEGA rank party’ were the key words that Irina took to heart in this situation. They were ranked at the top of the adventurer charts thus it would mean that soon they may even be running into each other during jobs, after Irina had inevitably reached that rank herself that is.

“So what’s with all the ruckus?”

The haughty werewolf asked some nearby adventurers that were whispering amongst themselves.

“N… nothing! It was nothing, ahahaha.”

The other adventurers tried to evade the topic. After a while the other adventurers had dispersed and the situation returned to normal. They were no longer talking trash about Irina, thus even if it was a little her anger had subsided.

For now her task was to return to the inn and report on whatever she saw. Perhaps she may even be able to get permission to destroy this place once she tells her master about the horrible things being said.
